With a focus on Kersh's science fiction, fantasy, and horror stories, On an Odd Note (1958) contains thirteen of his best. These are the plots of just a few of the brilliant tales you will find in this volume as you enter the bizarre world of master storyteller Gerald Kersh. – A desperate man makes an ill-advised bargain with a man in black – An extraordinarily horrible dummy exercises a frightful control over his terrified ventriloquist – A condemned murderer lives again through the eyes of an innocent child. – A merman found by fishermen off the coast of Brighton in 1745 will reveal the truth behind one of the most terrible events of the 20th century. – A lady is found dead in her bed, the apparent victim of a murder the coroner proves could not possibly have occurred. The discovery of piles of bones seeming to belong to a previously unknown species of monster will help to unfold a macabre and grisly tale. Low-effort book requests will be removed.
Being a wife means becoming a mother without ever giving birth. I mean, I think this book is about how men manage to train their women to carry all their burdens for them, both physical and emotional, by being gigantic babies. (Don’t forget to click the Goodreads link up above for a better synopsis of the plot.) This book is about how difficult marriage is. I have reached the point in my book reviewing career(?) where I am starting to have a list of authors that I trust explicitly with my entertainment, and Sally Hepworth is definitely on that list. So technically I did not choose to read this one, BUT I would have because I enjoyed The Good Sister and The Younger Wife very much. Martin’s Press for putting me on whatever list I am on so that I keep getting to review Sally Hepworth’s writing. This book was a spontaneous arrival in my DRC list on NetGalley. Martin’s Press) in exchange for an honest review. I think children will like that characters have to speak and act in a way that is the opposite of what they mean during the Festival of Lies, but it isn't done in such a juvenile manner that adults can't find it all very entertaining as well. The story is a lot of fun - short, but very cute. This series is targeted at the middle-grade audience, so younger readers would probably appreciate it more, but I found this book to be quite enjoyable all the same. Now Goldie has to save her friends while trying to survive in the middle of this bizarre place, made even stranger by the nature of the festival, where every day is "Opposite Day" and no one can be trusted. After a journey upon the seas, Toadspit ends up being captured too, and they all end up at the city of Spoke where the much-anticipated Festival of Lies is about to begin. But then her new friend Toadspit's little sister Bonnie is stolen away, and so the two older children take off after the kidnappers. As usual, her narration is fantastic, but for this second book of The Keepers Trilogy, I want to focus on the story because that's what I think really shines.Īfter the events of The Museum of Thieves (my review here), Goldie Roth has been offered the chance to become a Keeper of the Museum of Dunt. Okay, let's see if I can pull this review off without making it another gush-fest on my love for Claudia Black. |
